Cooper’s winning essay focused on her struggle with hearing impairment and its effect on her decision to pursue nursing.
CHICAGO, IL, August 28, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ — Mandy Cooper, a nursing student at the University of Pittsburgh pursuing a certificate in Global Health, has been awarded Pintas & Mullins Law Firm’s Future Nurses Scholarship for 2021. In her winning essay, Cooper wrote about her diagnosis of hearing loss in high school and the effect it has had on her decision to become a nurse.
“As a nurse who knows sign language, I will be able to open lines of communication with patients who have hearing difficulty,” she wrote. Cooper plans to use her skills and experience with hearing loss to help the more than 466 million people worldwide who suffer from this often debilitating condition.
Cooper is still deciding on her nursing ambitions, sifting through the many specialties available to dedicated nurses. Currently, she aims to become a neonatal nurse practitioner with emphasis on researching hearing loss issues.
At Pitt, Cooper has already begun researching “health disparities associated [with] socioeconomic status, patient preferences, and access to care among patients with hearing loss.” In fact, her work has been chosen by the National Conference on Undergraduate Research two years in a row.
In addition to her nursing rounds at Pitt, her academic studies, and her research endeavors, Mandy Cooper also plans to work toward a Global Health Certificate.
“I would really like to travel the world and see how healthcare services are administered in other countries,” she said, as this would help her understand how she can provide the best and most cutting-edge care to her patients in the future. “Each of us has a personal, moral responsibility to make the world a better place,” wrote Cooper.
Certainly, Mandy Cooper has a bright future ahead of her. Pintas & Mullins Law Firm is pleased to provide its $2,500 scholarship to help support her education and nursing goals. As Cooper mentioned in her winning essay, nurses have been named the Most Honest and Ethical Profession in official Gallup polls for the past two decades.
With her emphasis on healthcare disparities, a global perspective, and constant pursuit of excellence, Mandy Cooper is tailor-made for such a distinguished position.
