Frye will receive $2,500 toward her education at DePaul University.

ISLIP, NY, May 17, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ — When Grace Frye was just a little girl, she had a singular dream: to play competitive softball at the collegiate level. Frye was a promising talent, getting verbal commitments from various schools as early as eighth grade, fielding unofficial visits from head coaches, and planning her life around the sport.

Then, tragedy struck. Grace Frye suffered a back injury that effectively ended the dreams of collegiate softball. “In the moment, it felt like such a setback,” Frye writes in the essay that won her Scalice Land Surveying P.C.’s Growing Your Community Scholarship. “[It was] a heavy blow that left me desperate to find my new identity and purpose.”

That new identity and purpose showed itself in her local community. In the aftermath of her injury, Frye realized that her true passion is serving others. She began to take on service roles, inspired by her mother’s work as a Nurse-Manager.

“I volunteer at our local food pantry every Wednesday. I also volunteer for our holiday meal programs through our church,” Frye told representatives of Scalice Land Surveying P.C. She also volunteers at the inpatient cancer center at her local hospital.

Frye has put the dream of softball to rest, but she is far from losing her ambition. Following in her mother’s footsteps, she has been accepted into the nursing program at DePaul University and plans to focus on women and children’s healthcare.

Having already completed her CNA certification at Parkland College, Frye aims to work as a Registered Nurse after graduating from DePaul. Then, her goal is to return to school and become a Nurse Practitioner.

“I know, without a doubt, that my calling is the nursing profession,” she writes in her scholarship-winning essay. “I plan on touching as many lives as possible and using my gifts and talents to serve others.”
